Rex Women's Center Classes

About Our Birth Classes

Whether you're expecting your first child or you're a seasoned child care veteran, you want the best when it comes to family education.

That's why the Rex Women's Center offers a comprehensive series of classes designed to help you with all aspects of pregnancy, delivery and beyond. You may sign up for individual classes or for one of our special discount packages.

Register Early!

The Women's Center schedules classes to meet your needs. To be sure you are enrolled in classes that best suit your schedule and delivery date, you need to register early, especially for childbirth education classes. Classes are scheduled based on your due date. Classes fill rapidly so register early!

We've made it easy for you to register for classes offered by the Rex Women's Center. Simply follow the instructions below.

Preparing for Childbirth (weeknights)

Expectant parents should take this class during your third trimester to help you and your partner prepare for the baby's birth. Class covers relaxation techniques, medication, self-care and childbirth methods. Includes our BabyCare Basics class and a tour of the Rex Family Birth Center.

Once a week for five weeks.

Classes are offered Mon. - Thurs. evenings from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

$80 per couple

Preparing for Childbirth (weekends) Limited Availability*

Expectant parents should take this class during your third trimester to help you and your partner prepare for the baby's birth. Class covers relaxation techniques, medication, self-care and childbirth methods. Includes our BabyCare Basics class and a tour of the Rex Family Birth Center. Limited availability.

One day Saturday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Two Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. -1 p.m.

Three Saturdays, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Three Sundays, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.

$80 per couple  *Sign language interpretation not available at weekend classes.

Preparing for Childbirth Review

Refreshes the skills of seasoned parents. This class is designed for expectant parents who already have a child. Covers labor and delivery, breathing techniques and how to prepare siblings for the new arrival.

Two weeknights, once a week for two weeks from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

$40 per couple

Labor Support

This class is designed for couples wishing to experience a natural childbirth using their own inner resources and strength. This class is for “non-medicated” births only. You must also be enrolled in the Preparing for Childbirth Class or Preparing for Childbirth Review. Limited availability.

One evening session, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

$15 per couple

BabyCare Basics

Answers the question, “What do I do now?” Topics include newborn characteristics, bathing, and feeding. This class is included with the Preparing for Childbirth class. If you are not taking the Preparing for Childbirth class, you may register for this separately.

(This class is only offered once every two months.)

One weeknight, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Preparing to Breastfeed

Teaches expectant couples tips about breastfeeding. Led by a Rex RN/board-certified lactation consultants. Partners are encouraged to attend. Classes available in Raleigh and Cary.

Learn CPR and obstructed-airway maneuvers for infants, children and adults. This is not a certification class.

Big Brother/Big Sister Class

This class helps first time siblings prepare for the changes coming to your family. Children must be at least 3 years of age. Includes tour of Women's Center.

Saturday session, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday. session, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. (4 years and up only)

Total Body Conditioning (Prenatal Exercise)

healthymomsPrenatal class combines cardio and strength conditioning, including abdominal and pelvic floor work, and ends in a relaxation exercise. This class is taught by instructors of Healthy Moms Fitness.

Physician's written permission is required.

5 week sessions. Wednesday nights, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

$50 for 5 classes

Prenatal Yoga (Raleigh)

Class is designed to focus on physical, mental and emotional aspects of pregnancy. Breathing techniques and conscious relaxing are explored.

Moms in Motion (Postnatal Exercise)

Join other new moms for regular, moderate exercise to help you get back into shape after delivery. Infants welcome; bring infant seat or stroller. Physician's permission recommended.

Every Tuesday and Thursday mornings (ongoing), 10 a.m. -11 a.m.

$32 per person for eight classes

Infant Massage (Postnatal)

Learn about the emotional and health benefits of infant massage. Taught by certified instructors. Cost includes instruction and handbook.  Massage oil not included.

One weekday for four weeks, 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

$40 per person

First Family Package* (three courses)

This specially-priced package includes three classes to help first-time moms and their partners: Preparing for Childbirth, Preparing to Breastfeed and the Moms in Motion (postnatal exercise class).

$112 per couple (a savings of $22) *Sign language interpretation not available at weekend classes.

First Family Package* (four courses)

Includes all classes in First Family package plus Labor Support class (for “non-medicated” births only). Limited availability.

$122 per couple (a savings of $27) *Sign language interpretation not available at weekend classes.

Growing Family Package (three courses)

This specially-priced package includes Preparing for Childbirth Review, Postnatal Exercise and Big Brother/Big Sister class for one child (children must be 3 years or older).

$60 per couple and one child, $5 each additional child

Growing Family (four courses)

Includes All courses in Growing Family package plus Labor Support class (for “non-medicated” births only). Limited availability.

$70 per couple and one child, $5 each additional child

FREE Community Education

Working and Breastfeeding (Postnatal Class)

Taught by a board-certified lactation consultant, this class covers returning to the workplace, pumping, types of pumps and storing of breast milk.

Usually offered the first Friday of the month from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

Free

Child Passenger Safety Seats

Have peace of mind knowing your child is safe while riding in a vehicle. This class educates parents on correct selection and installation of car seats. The class is informational in nature and does not include actual seat installation assistance.

Tours of the Women's Center

Free adult tours available for those not enrolled in the Preparing for Childbirth class. Introduces you to both labor/delivery and postpartum areas.
